The objective of this research was to isolate and to verify the sensitivity to antimicrobial agents of strains of Salmonella sp. isolated from poultry products in the state of Ceara, Brazil. A total number of 114 samples was collected from 63 broiler carcasses derived from two processing plants and two supermarkets, and 51 excreta samples were collected in broiler farms located in the state of Ceara, which used three live production stages. Each excreta sample consisted of a fresh excreta pool from 100 birds. Samples were submitted to microbiological analyses, and the isolated Salmonella strains were tested for antimicrobial sensitivity. No Salmonella was isolated from excreta samples, while broiler carcass samples showed a high contamination rate of11.8%.... |

ABSTRACT Tomato is one of the most important vegetables in the world. Decay after harvest is a major issue in the development of tomato industry. Currently, the most effective method for controlling decay after harvest is storage of tomato at low temperature combined with usage of chemical bactericide; however, long-term usage of chemical bactericide not only causes pathogen resistance but also is harmful for human health and environment. Biocontrol method for the management of disease after tomato harvest has great practical significance. In this study, antagonistic bacterium B-6-1 strain was isolated from the surface of tomato and identified as Enterobacter cowanii based on morphological characteristics and physiological and biochemical features combined... |

110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify. |

Eleven spp of cephalopod were collected with the Isaacs Kidd midwater trawl during the Polymede expeditions on the N.O. 'Jean Charcot' in the western Mediterranean and in the vicinity of Cap Finisterre. The most abundant sp was Histioteuthis reversa. 14 spp were collected with the bottom trawl Marinovitch in the western part of the Alboran Sea. The most abundant mesobenthic sp was Bathypolypus sponsalis. The specimens, very similar to the type specimen from the Atlantic, are very different from the animals captured in the Catalonian Sea. |

A redescription of the genus Mustelus was undertaken in order to resolve the taxonomic confusion surrounding it. Metric characteristics, number of vertebrae, size and form of the teeth, colour, biology and geographical distribution are considered in description of the species M. mustelus (Linnaeus, 1758), Mustelus asterias Cloquet 1821, and M. mediterraneus new species, the several synonyms for each of which are listed. General remarks on each are made, and a final dichotomous key for identification is presented. |

The aim of the study was to analyze the relations between the issues of satisfaction, commitment, identification and word of mouth. The study was based on a theoretical gap detected in the relations between these concepts and seeks to present some contributions regarding, specifically, organic food consumption. From a review of the literature, six hypotheses were made. To assess the hypotheses, field work was conducted among 134 organic food consumers in Fortaleza, Ceará state. In order to test the hypotheses, statistical regression analysis was used After the statistical analysis, the main conclusions were: (1) the relation between satisfaction and word of mouth, in the organic food sector, is partial when analyzed together with consumer identification;... |

A Gram-negative, aerobic, gliding, orange-yellow marine bacterium was isolated from particulate material sampled from the Southern Ocean. This strain produced an exopolysaccharide in liquid culture. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that this isolate was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae, but represented a separate lineage. Major whole-cell fatty acids included i15:1 omega 10c, i15:0, beta-OH i15:0, a15:1 omega 10c, 15:0 and alpha-OH i15:0. The G+C content of the DNA was 49 mol%. Based on phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic analyses, this bacterium was placed in a novel taxon as Olleya marilimosa gen. nov., sp. nov. with type strain CAM030(T) (=ACAM 1065(T)=CIP 108537(T)). |
